Otherkin

There are only a few sites on the web with information about otherkin, what they are and what they're about as well as information on common types of species, even though there actually is no limit to the types of kin around. How many of you have tried searching for information on otherkin and instead of getting legitimate, useful pages on information, get loads and loads of RPG crap? This page is here to address the issue of otherkin and provide information on this subject, definately more useful than that RPG crap around.

What are Otherkin?
Fistly, the issue as to what otherkin are must be addressed. What does it mean to be kin? Well, people who call themselves kin believe themselves have a soul of something other than human, be it the soul of an animal, fae, dragon, or whatever. These people may have past life memories of being something that isn't human or may 'just know it' through instinct
You will find many types of kin around and the number of different types are limited. There are many who haven't yet found another person of the same species. However, there are a few common types of kin that tend to appear. These are vampires, weres, draconics, elves, and the fae, demonic-kin and angelics, as well as those who don't reallt fit into a category. Now, before you start thinking that this is a load of crap out of hollywood let me explain.

Vampires
When someone says "vampire" what usually comes to mind for the average person? A soul-sucking fiend that's undead and immortal, and bites people's necks to suck the blood and life out of them. First let me establish that this is false. This is the media's definition of a vampire, a definition that has become generally accepted by society. This then brings us to the question of what is a vampire? Firstly, we have to establish that vampires age, die, are not scared of the cross, will not burst into flames upon exposure to the sun, although many vampires are photosensitive, just like everybody else. They are just normal people with specific needs.

Sanguinarians
The first type of vampire we will look at are sanguinarians. These vampires are blood vampires, their bodies need blood to function. However, you won't find them going around biting people in the neck and murdering people, unless ofcourse they are psychopaths and/or diagnosed with a mental-problem. Most vampires will not drink from someone without consent from them, and won't drink so much as to kill someone. Some vampires even drink animal blood obtained from the butcher's. Also, the idea that by drinking their blood you will become a vampire yourself is false. Doing this won't get you anywhere as there is no way to be 'sired' into a vampire. If you are one, you'll just know it, if not then tough.

Psi-Vamps
Another type of vampire is the psychic vampire. These are people who feed off psychic energy or different types of emotions. If they feed from you, you usually tend to feel drained and tired but they may do this because their energy levels are not the same as other people so they need to take in energy to keep it up and stable. Different psi-vamps have different feeding patters. Some may like to feed from individuals, some may like to feed from a large group of people, such as in a concert.

Incubi/Succubi
A male of this type is called an incubus (pl. incubi) and a female is called a succubus (pl. succubi). These are very similar to psychic vampires in that they feed of energy except in this case the energy required is different. In this case the type of enery we are talking about is sexual energy. There is some controversy over whether they are vampiric or demonic and as a friend put it, by trait they could be labeled vampiric - needing the extra energy, but mythologically speaking they are often categorised as demons. I personally decided to put this in the vampire section because of the traits and techniques involved. I don’t think that either label: vampiric or demonic, should exclude each other since vampirism is more a reflection of a condition and demonic is an otherkin type/race. Of course you could argue either way, really. First look at the traits and if you think you are one then you decide for yourself whether you want to call yourself vampiric and/or demonic, all things considered. Alternatively if you definately are vampiric in terms of essence as well as the requiring of sexual energy and you definately do not wanna be compared to a demon, label yourself as a pranic vampire, it's up to you. In the end they are just labels. Labels change, the essence of the matter doesn't and what I am trying to do here is provide information about the main essence of the matter. That said, one must note that even if drained, sexual energy can be regenerated fairly quickly.

Image hosted by Photobucket.comWerecreatures
When someone usually thinks of a werecreature they usually think of someone that is able to shift into the form of an animal, usually by the light of the moon. This is just a myth, my friends. There is a medical illness called Lycanthropy in which a person believes themselves to be your typical werewolf with special magical powers. This is not what werecreatures really are. A werecreature, or therianthrope, is someone who believes themselves to have the soul of an animal, and may have past life memories of being that animal.

Physically shifting (P-shifting) into that animal is nearly impossible. It just can't be done and you will find very few legitamate weres out there who claim to be able to do this. Some people believe that this can be done, but just not in our plane of existance and there are some who belive it can be done in our plane of existance but requires years and years of training and may involve shamanism. What the truth is, no one knows for sure, but it's generally accepted that P-shifting is rare.

Dream shifting (D-shifting) on the other hand is very common among weres. This is when a were, or therian as they're now called, has a dream or various dreams of being an animal. These are often recurring dreams.

Another type of shifting is called M-Shifting. This is when someone who belives themselves to be a werecreature enters an alternate state of mind and feel themselves to be in the shape of their animal i.e. they feel phantom appendages, think like their animal, act like their animal, growl, etc. It's when their mind believes them to be in the shape of an animal. These can often manifest in blind fits of an emotion such as rage.

Now to dispell a few popular myths about werecreatures. The lore usually is inaccurate, exaggerated, and very confusing. There is a myth that if shot with a silver bullet, werecreatures can be killed. This is wrong because it doesn't matter if the bullet is silver or not if you shoot a werecreature in the heart, he/she will die just like anyone else would. Also, the myth about the vampire/werewolf rivalry is also complete rubbish. It is totally untrue. There is no war between vampires and weres in reality. Most of these myths are only myths and are completely fictional.

Draconics
Simply put, these are kin who believe themselves to have the soul or past life memories of being a dragon. Dragonkin or those with a draconic background are one of the more diverse kintypes out there. You can find them in all sizes and shapes. The more common types of dragons would be the western: quadro- or bipedal, a dinosaur like build including the tail, also often with wings. Decorational horns or spikes can be found on the head, across the back and/or tail. Another common type is the eastern dragon: slender snakelike body with smaller limbs and sometimes wings. These are of course only two well known ones out of many many more. Most draconic races are also closely involved with magic of various kinds. Though you must remember that not all of them breathe fire, some others breathe ice, acid, or even liquid nitrogen. It really depends from dragon to dragon.

TThere is also a certain kind of energy/feel connected to dragonkin but this is very hard to pin down and can only be felt if you are somewhat proficient with empathy or reading energy signatures. The best way I can describe it is this often ancient animalistic/predatory but very refined and controlled feeling. Of course there are exceptions but if you know what to look for its not that hard to pic out the draconics energywise.

Elves and the Fae
When people usually come accross the term "elf" or "faery" they usually get the picture of a happy-go-lucky bright devillish little creature, which to them, looks exactly like tinkerbell and whenever they hear those words tinkerbell, santa's helpers, or, recently, elves from Lord of the Rings pop into their heads. Many elfkn and faekin would be insulted if compared to these ideas of what elves and the fae are. These ideas are misjudgements and even if you try your hardest, you're not going to find Peter Pan and his little flying friend or Santa and his little elves out these. These are yet again, misconseptions. However, one must note that JRR. Tolkien did base his ideas about Elves on norse mythology and lore. Anyways, if these are just misconceptions what are elves and the fae in relation to otherkin you ask? Well, some kin believe themselves to have the soul of an elf or faery or believe to have been one in a past life and have memories of this.

Elves
There are many diverse races of elves believed to exist. These races are usually split up into those of the light and dark variety however some of them may not fit into either and are mostly neutral and fit mostly into one huge grey area. Below are listed some of the known species of elves.

Tulari: Image hosted by Photobucket.com
These are light elves and the Tulari were a fair to ruddy skinned race, and tended towards brown, golden brown, and auburn hair, with true red hair being somewhat rare. Eye color tended to greens, blues, light browns, and hazels. They were not considered to be as advanced as the Listari.

Listari:
These are light/cold elves and they lived in the colder regions, and tended to be pale of skin, have silver or silvery blond hair, and light eyes. The Listari remained more magically adept than the Drae'stari or Tulari. They seemed to be more in tune with the energy flows of the land, and with the Flow of Reality. They had towns and cities and a structured system of magic

Draestari:
"Draestari" translates best as "deep people". Early on, they were a deep forest/woodland race with dark skin, and usually either black or silver hair. Eyes were usually dark, although sometimes one would have amber/gold eyes, or violet eyes. In later times, the Drae'stari fled the deep woods and largely went into hiding - some underground, some in the cold lands. The ones who fled into the cold lands were often accepted by some of the Listari, and the resulting intermarriage added some additional skin, eye, and hair color variation.

Kalthilas:
These are wood elves and the Kalthilas were a nomadic culture most comfortable in the deep woods/forests. They tended towards tanned skin and brown/auburn hair with brown/green eyes, but that varied a fair amount. The Kalthilas might be viewed as primitives by some, in that they didn't build cities or work metal, but they had a strong culture, potent if odd magics, and a fierce warlike nature when needed.

Dai'ari:
These are the dark/night elves and they seem to have been a nocturnal culture that was physically similar to the Listari. Like the Listari, they seem to have retained a better feel for magic over time, and they had significant mental abilities.

Gae'ari:
These are sea elves and they usually live underwater, however they can breathe air. It may be belived that the gills that they have appeared later on as even though they could breathe air, they prefered water. They also live on the surface of the sea as well as under.

Shiri:
This is a subculture of elves that are a result of intermarriages between races. This leads to offshoots and distortions of the original races.

Shadow Elves:
These are thought to be the spirits of the elven dead but we now know that in fact, they are a species of elves that stayed in the shadows and practice shadow magic.

Disclaimer: The information above may or may not be correct. The sources used to gather this list were taken from references from folklore and the speculations of others.

The Fae
There are many races of fae, believed to be nature spirits, that exist and these are split up into two different Courts The Courts, as they are called, are bands of trooping faeries, little seen by humans, but often encountered. The two courts are one of the dualities of mythology, representing the light and dark, good and bad, blessed and damned. The names, incidentally are usually thought of as “blessed” (Seelie) and “unblessed” (Unseelie).

The Seelie court:
Believed to be all benevolent and good, the Seelie Court, myth says, interacted quite often with humans, helping where they chose and when they chose. (There are some myths that have them bestowing gifts on those chosen humans.) However, humans could neither contact the court nor make requests for help. The Court gave help only to those they thought worthy. Concerning the term “Court,” the Seelie often acted as mediators and judges in faery disputes and so found the term applied to them. The members of this court are perceived to be mischievous but don't harm humans.

The Unseelie Court:
While the Seelie is good and blessed, the Unseelie are the unblessed. There are some legends that say these faeries were once apart of the Seelie Court but they fell from grace (much like some Christian angels, making one wonder if perhaps the myth of the Unseelie Court was influenced by early Christian mythos). The Unseelie court interacts in the affairs of humans as well, but not in any benevolent way. Some legends say that the Unseelie have no means of reproduction, and so they make away with humans whom they believe would not be missed and carry them off with their ravel, intending to “make” the human one of them. These children are often called "changelings".

Others:
Some faeries serve do not really belong to either of the courts and are often associated with death, sometimes warning humans and their families of an upcoming death. These faeries are harbingers of death and, if spotted, are seen to be bad omens.

Brief descriptions of faery types, according to lore, can be found here.

Angels and Demons
Other types of kin that tend to emerge frequently are angelics and demons. Angelics believes themselves to have the soul of or remember being an angel whereas demons believes themselves to have the soul of or remember being demons. There are many misconceptions about angels and demons since most people tend to associate them with Christianity. While some may believe themselves to be Christian angels or devils, some may believe themselves to be of Sumerian origin. Those of Sumer were belived to be very violent creatures, both the angels and demons, unlike the Christian concept.

Image hosted by Photobucket.comDemons and Demonic-Kin

These, as I metioned, are people who believe they have a demonic soul or were a demon in a past life. Demons are beings which emit negative energy, usually seen as "evil" spirits, although not all are evil. I like to think of demons as both good and bad, just like any other race. I do believe demons are a race or probably several. And I would see japanese demons as a much better example than christian demons.

To me Demons are dark beings, rather chaotic in nature but capable of good and evil. I think there is quite some variation amongst them, like with all races. What I do think to be a general trait is that they are a bit more egotistical ... although humans aren't too bad in that themselves.

And then there are of course ones inner demons ... we all know those or at least should.

Demons are not really beings I'd want to trust... but according to a friend's experience, they can be excellent guardians They can be both good and bad, depending on who hires/creates/touches (as in befriends, allies, convinces, etc) them. Like mystical mercenaries, if you will.

Thing is the demons that can reach our plane, the ones we know, are likely to be the stronger ones out there since they need the power to be able to get to this world so that is probably why they are thought to have more bio-electricity. Altogether I believe that demon races have just as much variety than humans do.

Of course you can't be a full blood demon right here and now .. the only full blood we could be in this world is human but most of us aren't fully human. We all are at least partially human though. I believe that full bloods of any species are extremely rare if they even exist. This is all speaking on a non-physical level of course.

Anyways demons are hardly ever controlled and used .. they live lives just like we do yanno.

As for demonic kin they too emit a negative, demonic, energy. They believe themselves to be closely related to these beings.

Angels and Angelics
What is an angel? Angels are beings that serve Powers That Be, Divine Messengers, those who watch and guard. Mnay people upon hearing the word "angel" automatically picture christianity's angels. This idea that "angels" can only refer to christian ones is a misconception. Angels were present in many other faiths and civilizations. These includes angels of Sumerian origian, servants of the dark, non-fluffy sumerian gods, as well as those of Zoroastrian and Mesopotiamian angels. In fact, the Zoroastrian angels, being dualistic, were also thought to be hostile and rebellious towards God. There are also angels like Hermes, the Greek divine messenger. Simply put, angels are beings that serve a singular purpose no matter which cumture they are from.

Now, onto what the word "Angelic" refers to in the otherkin community. Angelics, otherwise known as Watchers, believe themselves to be the incarnate, and mortal version of an angel, that are here to fulfill a purpose. This purpose can be to either act as a gurdian to certain people, fulfil an important task, or have chosen or been sent to reset an internal imbalance or negative corruption within themselves. Some angels call themselves "fallen" if they belong to the latter category. These are people who have memories of being not on the mortal plane, which can be triggered by anything. For example, by an increased ineterst in mythology, theology, etc.

Even though we are all different, there are a few attributed I've seen common amongst Angelics. They often report a longing for "home", have a hightened sense of empathy, and are usually involved in one-sided relationships (of any kind) as they are the ones giving (this can be either good or bad depending on the nature of said angelic). Other behaviours common to Angelics include the ability to glow around people who are hurt. This does not mean they glow physically, but their skin appears more bright and lighetened. Also, they often focus on one thing, one purpose, one conception intensely, so intensely that they may disregard all else, and also tend to have slightly stiff and rigid personalities. Sometimes, they have a feverish or intense look to them in terms of personality and actions. However, you must keep in mind that while these attributes generally apply to a lot of Angelics, they do not apply to all of them.

Others/Image hosted by Photobucket.comWTF?!-Kin
One must note that there are many species of otherkin that are uncategorized as of yet. There are some people out there who are of a completely unique species and are trying to find others like them. There are also those who believe themselves to be of the common kin types, but a mixture of them. These are people with various and myriad kin types which they believe themselves to be based on dreams, visions, instint and/or past lives. However, just because these people are different and do not fit into any one category or are a separate one alltogether, we must not dissmiss them or consider their kin-types any less valid.

How to tell if you're kin?
There really isn't a fool-proof method to see if you're kin or not. You can't just go through a test and come out saying "Hey I'm kin!" or "Damn it I failed! This means I'm not kin". If you are kin, you'll just know it. There isn't a definate way to tell but of you are kin you'll feel it, although otherkin usually tend to have a strong connection to nature. You will feel the difference in your spirit if you're kin, it's instinct. There really is no tangible proof of this and it really is a matter of faith. When people first realise that they are kin, it's called the "awakening". Going through the awakening process may be hard and it may take years or a few months to fully awaken depending on each individual case. However, if you do feel that you are kin or are awakening, you may check out the tipsI've provided below or contact me and I will try my best to help you.

Tips on figuring out more about your kin type and/or past life
A lot of you have emailed me telling me that you know you're kin but you don't know how to get started on the search for what you are or have said that you think you are a certain kin type but you want help on how to further investigate. You can try and look out for and identify certain triggers that make you feel a certain way. For example, triggers that create a certain weird spark or feeling in you. You can look for triggers to release your memories or find a place that you feel drawn to, or a cetain thing that you are draw to like art, a picture, anything. For exmaple for me it was storms. Whenever there's a storm I feel my phantom wings more vividly, I get restless, the wind exhilarates me, and I feel a rush of energy. Also weather spells work especially effective for me. It was just a string of things, triggers, and I concluded that I am some sort of storm faery. Sincle at the time I knew I was a faery but was just a bit vague on exactly what type.

Meditation also helps a lot of otherkin figure out what they are, more about what they are if they already know, identify things about a past life, or things about the place their species are from. There's just something about the astral and meditation that seems to aid a lot of otherkin. So, I would suggest you look into meditation techniques and meditate on the issue at hand and see what happens. The techniques have a lot to do with deep breathing and relaxing. Though don't take everything you see at face value.

Alternatively, you could try a past life spell. There is one spell that I always cite to lost or confused otherkin and most of the time it gives you results. The common theme though is that this mostly does not happen on the first try. The spell is as follows:

Items needed:
1 white candle
1 mirror
Yourself

Sit in front of the mirror, turn off the lights, and light the candle. Set the candle next to the mirror so the light from it can hit your face, but so you will not see the candle in the mirror.

After this is done, look into your eyes and say:

"Oracle of lunar light, Send me the second sight."

Stare into your eyes and do not blink.
Your reflection will dissolve and another will appear.
Try to look at the face, body, clothing, and surroundings.
After you do this you will have emotions you can not explain.
Don't worry they go away in a few minutes.

Alternatively you could write or find a dream spell to help you remember something.

One last tip, research. Do lots and lots of research on otherkin and/or your suspected kin type. The things you find may ring a bell or act as a trigger for you. But, good luck.
